3 / Can Sadlerstone colour match a special colour for me?

Sadlerstone has a large range of standard contemporary colours suited to a wide range of architectural and design aesthetics. We also have a library of non-standard colours produced for previous projects.

For extra cost, we can produce custom colours that must be for a minimum of 2,000 ft2 (200 m2) or equivalent payment. Each trial sample attracts a charge, however these charges can be credited to your final order.

4 / Can Sadlerstone be made in non-standard sizes?

Yes, at an additional charge, Sadlerstone can be made in variations of its standard tile sizes. Sadlerstone is cast into 1200x2400mm (4x8’) slabs, so variations can be cut from this size. However, a length vs. width vs. thickness ratio needs to be met for the tiles to be strong and stable.

Contact Sadlerstone for specific project inquires.

5 / What are the environmental benefits of Sadlerstone:

Sadlerstone is an environmentally-preferable flooring solution:

  • While most poured concrete floors require annual resealing and waxing, Sadlerstone premium-quality concrete tiles require only one initial application of a penetrating sealer. On an ongoing basis, tiles need only a wet mop with a neutral detergent.
  • Rather than baking or firing, which is often the case with hard-surface flooring alternatives, Sadlerstone is manufactured in efficient sized slabs which are left to naturally cure at ambient temperatures, ensuring an overall lower embodied energy.
  • Natural inorganic oxides color the stone, ensuring the tiles remain colourfast.
  • Sadlerstone recycles all manufacturing by-products and by operates a closed-loop manufacturing system with zero emissions to air, water or land.
  • In addition, as an agglomerate of natural materials, Sadlerstone itself is recyclable and can be used in numerous post consumer applications.

6 / What is the lead time for fulfilling orders?

Sadlerstone keeps its Signature Collection in Smooth Finish size 608x608x15mm (24x24x5/8”) in stock at the factory to help fulfill your short-lead-time project needs. All other sizes, colours and finishes are custom manufactured and require a 2-4 week lead-time ex our factory. Contact Sadlerstone to discuss your project needs in more detail.

7 / What is the slip resistance of Sadlerstone?

SMOOTH:

Class X (R10 Equiv.)
Coefficient of Friction: 0.86 (dry), 0.85 (wet)

TEXTURED:

Class V (R12 Equiv.)
Coefficient of Friction: 0.9 (dry), 0.85 (wet)

TERRAZZO (SAWN):

Class W (R11 Equiv.)

8 / Why do Sadlerstone tiles show tonal variation?

  • Sadlerstone displays shading or tonal variation that is caused by natural variations inherent in the raw materials employed. We promote this as a very desirable feature of the product. When viewing an actual installation, tonal variations appear diminished and the shifts in tone produce an overall warm and pleasing effect.
  • When freshly cleaned and buffed a Sadler installation will show a higher degree of tonal variation than one that is older. As the tile is not glazed with an impervious surface, over time, use and the process of cleaning and occasional buffing will bring the tone of the tiles closer together. By being treated in the same way over time, initial tonal variations will fade and an overall patina will develop. As tonal variation is sometimes caused by retained moisture in the tile, variations will fade as the tile material continues to age.
  • It is important not to expect the tiles to have the properties of a fully glazed ceramic tile or similar monochromatic and impervious surface. It is advisable to allow installations to mature over time without attempting to hasten changes with chemical treatment.
  • As perceptions regarding preferred levels of tonal variation and darkness and light are subjective, it is not possible to nominate a time frame during which the floor could be said to have reached an "ideal" tone. Proper ongoing maintenance will achieve this naturally.
  • When installing tiles ensure that the distribution of tiles is such that local concentrations of one type or similarity do not occur by blending tiles from different crates or pallets.
  • Note that the application of a surface sealer may diminish tonal variations and darken the overall tone of the installation when viewed from certain angles.
  • Window Pane Effect: When first installed, a few tiles may show a "window pane" effect where the edges of the tile show a different tone from the centre. After the installation has been down for a while, this differentiation will fade from the surface.

9 / What expectations should I have for a concrete stone?

Sadlerstone is an agglomerate of granite, sand, cement, water and natural oxides and we should expect natural characteristics and tonal variations caused by variations inherent in the raw materials employed.

Given that Sadlerstone is concrete, is not impervious to staining and is in no way like a fully vitrified porcelain tile. However, in comparison with other natural materials, like stone, Sadlerstone is a fairly dense and low porosity finish.

Like all stone, Sadlerstone is not impervious to acid aggression and etching. Water pooling and evaporation can cause slight marking, called “tide-marks”, which are associated with all cementious materials. This can add an attractive patina to the surface and will fade during on-going maintenance. To avoid any marking, spills need to be wiped up in a timely fashion.

Where a topical sealer is being used you can follow this guide – heree

10 / How do I maintain and clean my Sadlerstone floor?

A periodic mop with a neutral detergent mixed with water will not only maintain the cleanliness of your floor, but each clean aides in the strengthening of the concrete matrix, futher enhancing the floors performance characteristics.

11 / Is there anything special I should know about storing Sadlerstone?

Sadlerstone is packaged in specially manufactured solid wood crates which ensure the tiles arrive in the best possible condition. Crates should be stored indoors and can be stacked two-high. Be sure to acclimate the tiles to the final installation environment for 4-7 days.

12 / Which adhesives (setting materials) are suitable for Sadlerstone?

For most installations using standard size tiles over a concrete substrate use the Mapei Granirapid system (Granirapid is a quality two part rapid setting thin-set adhesive applied with a notched trowel). Do not use a sand and cement slurry or a one part adhesive.

Sadlerstone tiles are not suited to installations involving large quantities of water. Some installations may not require a rapid-setting adhesive, while others may require a polyurethane or epoxy adhesive etc. Contact your Mapei adhesive specialist for advice on specific installations.

13 / Do I need to seal Sadlerstone tiles?

Sadlerstone tiles are primer sealed with a high quality solvent-based impregnator (penetrating sealer) in the factory to assist grout release and site clean-up. However, we recommend further finishing and sealing of Sadlerstone as part of our installation recommendations.

Smooth & Terrazzo (honed and polished)
After smooth tiles are installed, further sealing with an organic solvent based impregnating sealer (water based sealers are less effective) is always recommended. Impregnators work like a “Scotchguard”. Although they effectively protect the tile from dirt and penetrating stains, but as they do not form a film on the surface they don't increase resistance against acid aggression (lemon juice, wine, vinegar etc) or watermarking.

Sadlerstone recommends that a premium quality solvent-based impregnator be professionally applied to all types of new smooth surface installations. This impregnator does not change the natural appearance of Sadlerstone, allows vapour permeability and does not yellow over time.

Surface sealers can provide greater protection for Sadlerstone, but they may need to be replaced if they wear and show scratches. Surface sealers are usually quite glossy and may detract from the natural low-sheen finish of the tile. Special preparations may be required when applying surface sealers. Water based acrylic sealers are preferred.

See Installation, Finishing and Care Guide for Sadlerstone Smooth and Terrazzo (honed and polished) – here

Textured
After textured tiles are installed, further sealing with an enhancer sealer is recommended.
See Installation, Finishing and Care Guide for Sadlerstone Textured – here

Terrazzo (sawn)
Prior to grouting, apply one coat of pre-sealer. This will assist with grout release.  After sawn terrazzo tiles are installed, further sealing with an enhancer sealer is recommended.

14 / Can I install Sadlerstone tiles over sub-floor heating?

Yes. Detailed information can be found in our Technical Bulletin: Sub Floor Heating.
Download Here [304KB]

15 / Can I install Sadlerstone tiles on timber substrates?

Yes. Contact your Mapei adhesive specialist for advice on products and the specific requirements of your installation.

16 / What wastage should I account for when ordering this product?

We recommend ordering an additional 10-15% for each project to account for cuts and future replacement if required.

17 / Are Sadlerstone tiles suitable for cladding?

Sadlerstone tiles have been successfully used on many cladding projects. Standard thickness tiles, 3/8" to 1" (10mm to 25mm), can be direct fixed to lower walls. For higher walls many considerations come into play: eg the nature of the substrate, likely wind-loads, movement and settling etc.

Accordingly, refer to your local standards and seek advice from a structural engineer for suitable fixing systems. There are many proprietary fixing systems on the market that are suitable for Sadlerstone tiles. Refer your engineer to Sadlerstone technical literature for information on sizes, strength, weight etc.

18 / Are Sadlerstone tiles suitable for kitchen and bathroom floors?

It is important to understand the nature of concrete in wet-areas and ensure product expectations are in line with product capabilities.

If you do decide to use Sadlerstone in your kitchen or bathroom, extra impregnator should be applied (Sealing and impregnators).

Expectations:
Water pooling and evaporation can cause marking, called “tide-marks”, which are associated with all cementious materials. With general use and maintenance, shadows from evaporated water tend to fade over time. Lighter tiles show evaporation marks less. Do not expect the tiles to have the properties of a fully glazed ceramic tile or similar impervious surface.

Always clean kitchen and bathroom floors with recommended pH neutral detergents and detergents supplied by the sealer manufacturer (never bleaches or polysolvents).  Clean up spillages of foods, cosmetics etc promptly. Sadlerstone becomes more resilient as it ages and water shadows will fade over time. Follow cleaning procedures in Sadlerstone technical literature. Download Here [304KB]

Although Sadlerstone smooth tiles become more resilient as they age, constant wetness can etch the tile surface over time. Sadlerstone tiles in kitchens and bathrooms will show “character”.

Usage, Cleaning and Maintenance:
As the tiles are carbonate based it is important that acidic chemicals are not allowed to sit on the surface for any length of time. Even with the impregnator applied, acidic materials and water, if left on the surface, can etch or stain it.

  • Only mild pH neutral detergents supplied by the impregnator (penetrating sealer) manufacturer should be used for cleaning. Bleaches and polysolvents containing acid should never be used.
  • If the surface dulls it can be rebuffed occasionally to restore the distinctive low-sheen finish.
  • Tiles can be rubbed with grapeseed oil. This will protect the tile and help maintain the sheen. Periodically, grapeseed oil can be reapplied after cleaning.

19 / Can I use Sadlerstone tiles as paving over sand or crushed rock?

Yes, however Sadlerstone tiles are a true tile usually intended for solid substrates. Smaller, thicker tiles are suited to a well-compressed crushed rock / sand base. Tiles should be at least 1" (25mm) thick and no larger than 16" (405mm) square.

20 / Are Sadlerstone tiles suitable for pool surrounds?

Sadlerstone textured tiles are very suited to pool surrounds and have been successfully installed in many pool projects. Sadlerstone tiles are coloured to their full thickness with inorganic oxides which do not fade, and they are not affected by standard pool chemicals. As Sadlerstone tiles are precision cut, close grout joints can be used to give pool surrounds a near-seamless aesthetic.

They have an extremely hard surface that is slip resistant but feels pleasant underfoot.

They come in a large range of standard colours allowing the ability to match or complement existing colour schemes, and custom colours and sizes can be produced.

A range of edge profiles is available for coping, step treads etc.

21 / Are Sadlerstone tiles suitable for bathrooms?

The Sadlerstone Honed & Polished Terrazzo range is best suited for bathroom environments.

It is important to understand the nature of concrete in wet-areas and ensure product expectations are in line with product capabilities.

if you do decided to use Sadlerstone in your shower recess, ensure that substrates are waterproofed prior to tiling and a quality adhesive is used. Seek specialist advice on waterproofing substrates, and advice from your Mapei specialist on adhesives and grouting.

Shower recess areas should be further protecled after tiles are installed by the professional application of a high quality impregnating sealer.

Expectations: Water pooling and evaporation can cause marking, called “tide-marks”, which are associated with all cementious materials. With general use and maintenance, shadows from evaporated water tend to fade over time. Lighter tiles show evaporation marks less. Do not expect the tiles to have the properties of a fully glazed ceramic tile or similar impervious surface.

As body acids and soap residues may dull the surface of the tile over time, it is imporatant to use cleaning products suppplied by the impregnator (penetrating sealer) manufacturer to maintain the tiles in good condition.

Although Sadlerstones smooth tiles become more resilient as they age, constant wetness and exposure to body acids, shampoos etc can etch the tile surface over time. Sadlerstone tiles in shower recesses will show "character".

Usage, Cleaning and Maintenance: As the tiles are carbonate based it is important that acidic chemicals are not allowed to sit on the surface for any length of time. Even with the impregnator applied, acidic materials, if left on the surface, can etch or stain it.

Only mild pH neutral detergents supplied by the impregnator (penetrating sealer) manufacturer should be used for cleaning. Bleaches and polysolvents containing acid should never be used.

  • If the surface dulls it can be rebuffed occasionally to restore the distinctive low-sheen finish.
  • The walls of the shower recess can also be rubbed with grapeseed oil. This will protect the tile and help maintain the sheen. Periodically, grapeseed il can be reapplied after cleaning.

22 / Do you make stair treads and nosings?

Sadlerstone have a range of standard edge profiles to suit most applications. Profiles include pencil round, full-bullnose, half bull-nose, chamfered and cove. Illustrations of the profiles and details of sizes are shown here.

23 / Can I use Sadlerstone with a pedestal (raised access flooring) application?

Yes it is possible. Contact Sadlerstone to discuss you specific project needs
